Guthrie Govan’s Charvel Signature Models Earn Rave Marks

Posted on September 25th, 2017 by Chrissy Mauck

In its October issue, UK’s Guitarist magazine takes an in-depth look at Guthrie Govan’s newest Charvel signature models  — the Guthrie Govan Signature HSH Caramelized Ash and the Guthrie Govan Signature HSH Flame Maple.

Both models earned a rave review, with the magazine concluding that these bolt-on instruments are “up there with the finest” they’d ever played, and more like a high-performance rifle than a guitar.

The article takes an in-depth look at all the features of these “uber axes,” noting its many subtle and well-thought out details.

“The bridge, initially, looks like an early Floyd Rose (without fine tuners) but is a USA-made Charvel design that centers around a thick brass inertia block, steel top plate and large saddles into which the strings are locked via those long Allen key bolts; once intonation is set each saddle is firmly locked in place,” writes reviewer Dave Burlluck. “It’s back routed too and the whole unit is recessed into the body so the top of the bridge plate is flush with the top of the body. A Tremol-No is fitted so you can prevent upbend, lock it in place as a fixed bridge or, as supplied, just use it as a free floating vibrato with a huge range from floppy to an upbend of approximately a fourth on the G string (it’ll go a bit higher but we stopped there).

“Guthrie Govan’s vision for an all round workhouse that’ll stand up to the rigors of professional touring is superbly realized in this signature. Every detail is wonderfully considered: the over-sized strap buttons, the Strat-like dished output jack placement, the hugely intuitive drive, that secret ‘single coil’ switch, the impressive tuning stability (and startling range) of the vibrato, not to mention the wood choice, graphite reinforced neck and a really unposh working player’s vibe. Is there anything Guthrie hasn’t considered?”

In summary, Guitarist proclaims Guthrie’s signature models as astonishing guitars and a player’s tools of of the highest caliber.

Steel Panther Switch Up A Few Things for ‘Lower the Bar’

Posted on March 29th, 2017 by Chrissy Mauck

Internationally renowned glam rock act Steel Panther has dropped  its latest effort on the masses and despite the album’s title, fans should raise their expectations for Lower the Bar.

“I think we’ve expanded, frontman Michael Starr explained to Billboard. “Our style is still the same formula, I guess, but we’ve changed it up a bit. I could say that we used to sing about pussy and partying; now we’re singing about partying and pussy, but the reality is we did switch up a few things. It’s a really solid, fun, intelligent party record. We’re just maturing as a band after being on the road for years together and living together. It shows.

“It’s hard to put into words without sounding like a typical review, but it feels different to me. It feels like we’re doing some melody lines we normally wouldn’t do on a couple of sings, different kinds of moods and not necessary just ‘Dr. Feelgood’. There’s some different stuff in there, but everything’s open for interpretation.”

Co-produced with longtime collaborator Jay Ruston, the album features 11 new songs with another two tracks available on a Best Buy deluxe edition. In true form for the kings of debauchery, song titles range from “Pussy Ain’t Free” to “Poontang Boomerang” and “Goin’ in the Backdoor.”

Sample the effort below with the new video for “I Got What You Want,” which was filmed during Steel Panther’s sold-out 2016 U.K. arena tour and features Satchel tearing away at his  Custom Charvel Dinky Bengal Striped.

7 Charvel Custom Shop Marvels

Posted on January 24th, 2017 by Chrissy Mauck

The Charvel Custom Shop unveiled some magnificent beauties during the 2017 NAMM Show in Anaheim, Calif. Here’s a look at 7 by Master Builder “Red” Dave Nichols.

So-Cal Scallop Relic Black

Pulling from the more classic and conservative side of Charvel, this custom So-Cal Scallop axe looks like it’s been slung around for the last 25 years with its black finish, white pickguard and excellent relic job on both the finish and hardware.

The guitar features an alder body with a bolt-on quartersawn maple neck,  scallop maple fingerboard with 24 jumbo frets, a reverse headstock, Seymour Duncan pickups, Original Floyd Rose® and Gotoh tuners.

+++

Surfcaster Dart Swinger Brown

This offset gem features an alder body with a bolt-on maple neck, a rosewood fingerboard with 22 jumbo frets and bass sidebar inlay. Powered by Seymour Duncan P-90 Soapbar pickups, this axe also has a Tonepros Tune-O-Matic bridge and Gotoh tuners.

Its Dart Swinger Brown finish is set off nicely with vintage white binding around the body, neck and headstock, which features the Charvel script logo.

+++

San Dimas Sandblast

A pair of San Dimas Style 1 ash bodies were sandblasted for a raw and edgy-vibe.

The San Dimas HSH Sandblast model features a black body with neon green satin grainfill finish. A bolt-on quartersawn maple neck features an ebony fingerboard, while the DiMarzio pickups are finished with matching neon green covers for a truly spectacular combo.  Also offers a Floyd Rose Lo Pro Bridge.

The San Dimas Sandblast sticks with a basic monochromatic color palette, and yet is equally remarkable in looks, complete with a pair of Bare Knuckle Holy Driver pickups and a Hipshot hard tail bridge.

+++

Dinky Poplar

Sometimes you just need the bare essentials. The Custom Dinky Poplar is as natural as it gets, featuring a poplar body and a bolt-on quartersawn maple neck with a scallop fingerboard and reverse headstock. Powered by a Bill Lawrence L-500XL bridge pickup and a Seymour Duncan SH1 pickup, this high-performance axe also offers a spokewheel truss rod adjust at the butt-end of the neck, an Original Floyd Rose bridge, Gotoh tuners and chrome hardware.

+++

San Dimas Big Mouth

For those who like to run their mouth, this San Dimas alder body got a sick and vivid custom graphic paint job featuring some sharp canines with tongue hanging out Miley Cyrus style.   Its bolt-on quartersawn maple neck features a maple fingerboard with black dot inlays and 22 jumbo frets.

Also features Seymour Duncan pickups, a Charvel brass trem hardtail bridge and Gotoh Tuners.

Style 2 Cherry Burst

Simple yet stunning. That’s what comes to mind when taking a close look at this Style 2 guitar featuring an ash body with a Cherry Burst finish, a bolt-on caramelized flame maple neck and black six in line reverse headstock with a script Charvel logo.

Also features a pair of DiMarzio DP-184 Chopper pickups, a Hipshot USA Tele bridge in black and a convenient thumbwheel truss rod adjustment at the butt-end of the neck.

Gojira Drops Stunning Video for ‘Silvera’

Posted on May 20th, 2016 by Chrissy Mauck

French progressive metal act Gojira have returned to the metal scene with a vengeance, delivering a stunning new video for second single “Silvera” off upcoming June 17 album Magma.

Directed by Drew Cox, live footage of the band feverishly performing on a rooftop is mixed with surreal and odd scenes including a woman dancing—first while sheathed in a stretchy white fabric and later in a cloud of white powder, another woman shedding black tar tears, a boy with a crown of thorns and a sky filled with bodies streaking upwards.

It’s a clip that, similar to the video for “Stranded,” leaves viewers searching for its hidden meaning.

Start Your Weekend with the New Gojira Single, ‘Stranded’

Posted on April 22nd, 2016 by Chrissy Mauck

Charvel signature artist Joe Duplantier and his French metal act Gojira are getting the weekend off to a killer start, with the release of a new video for new single “Stranded.” The band also released the album cover art for Magma, dropping June 17.

Directed by Vincent Caldoni, the sepia video features the band performing live indoors, but also other strange imagery including a woman dancing wildly, smashing a pile of eggs and then painting the guys’ faces.  Combined, the beautifully shot footage conveys a sense of feeling trapped and desperation.

Watch the video and see the new album cover below.
