When All That Remains played LAZERfest in Des Moines, Iowa, earlier this year, lucky fan Alex Arias won the chance to perform on stage with the band, and the young guitarist definitely made the most of his opportunity.

Jake E Lee Returns to That Metal Show

Posted on July 23rd, 2013 by MDuffy

Jake E Lee went another round as the featured guitarist on That Metal Show last weekend after holding down that spot during the previous episode.

The former Ozzy Osbourne and Badlands axeman actually sat down with the guys of That Metal Show earlier in the season to talk about his latest project Jake E Lee’s Red Dragon Cartel. But as the program’s musical accompaniment, Lee demonstrated that his fretwork is as fiery as ever.

Charvel Joins Forces With Guthrie Govan

Posted on July 18th, 2013 by MDuffy

Charvel is proud to welcome U.K. guitarist Guthrie Govan to the family. A highly-respected and in-demand virtuoso guitarist, Govan travels the world as both a performer and clinician. Govan is currently splitting time between his rock/fusion trio, The Aristocrats, and touring the world with Steven Wilson’s band, promoting Wilson’s Alan Parsons-produced album, The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories).

Govan made a name for himself in 1993, winning Guitarist Magazine’s “Guitarist of the Year” competition: he subsequently worked as a regular transcriber for U.K. magazine Guitar Techniques. He has since appeared with Asia, GPS, Dizzee Rascal and The Young Punx. His diverse playing style ranges from classic shred to jazz-fusion to blues-rock, all of which are clearly evident on his solo album Erotic Cakes and throughout his numerous other musical projects.

“These guitars sound great, and the necks are just ridiculous,” said Govan. “The good people at Charvel are encouragingly keen to hear all my feedback about their instruments. Whenever I share an idea with them, it feels like they’re really listening – so I’m very excited to be working with these guys and I look forward to seeing what we can do together in the future.”

“Guthrie Govan is one of the best performers playing today, and we’re proud to welcome him to the Charvel ‘family,’” said Michael McGregor, product manager for Charvel Guitars. “He is currently road-testing a few Charvel models, and we are in the research and development phase of some possible future Charvel guitars.”

Mike Orlando Featured in Latest Guitar Player

Posted on July 12th, 2013 by MDuffy

By: Jimmy Smith

Guitar Player magazine caught up with Adrenaline Mob guitarist Mike Orlando to touch on his band’s recently released EP of covers, Coverta.

Inside the July issue, the Charvel artist explains what it’s like covering the Door’s “Break on Through (to the Other Side),” and how he was very cautious in covering classic guitar solos from greats like Led Zeppelin, Van Halen and Black Sabbath.

“You can’t mess with greatness,” he said. “We picked iconic songs, and you run the risk of getting trampled on if you do things a different way.”

Huntress Slays at Mayhem Festival

Posted on July 3rd, 2013 by MDuffy

With a new album Starbound Beast coming out earlier this year, California metallers Huntress scored a choice spot on the summerlong Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival roster.

At the fest’s recent tour-opening event in San Bernadino, Calif., Huntress definitely earned their billing, unleashing a furious performance on an eager audience that held their horns high.

Calling to mind European heavy metal from the 1980s, Huntress’ dueling guitars provided great depth to their songs.  Guitarists Blake Meahl and Anthony Crocamo seem to emit more thrash metal, but they also dabble in black metal and more melodic sounds.

Meanwhile, it is impossible to take ones eyes off Huntress’ Jill Janus, whose stage presence is full of dark energy.  Donning a black cape on a day where temperatures reached the triple digits, Janus stalked back and forth, alternating between creeping ghoul and marching soldier. (more…)

Preview the Aristocrats’ Upcoming Culture Clash Album

Posted on July 2nd, 2013 by MDuffy

Progressive/fusion band the Aristocrats have their second full-length album coming out July 16 in the form of Culture Clash, and the trio has offered fans a taste of the new tracks.

Made up of guitarist Guthrie Govan, bassist Bryan Beller and drummer Marco Minnemann, the Aristocrats believe they have pushed the envelope even further with this record.

Govan recently told MusicRadar, “We have an unreasonable amount of fun playing together. Every 20 seconds, I’ll hear something from one of the other guys that just makes me smile, or it terrifies me. But it keeps you on your toes. We all play for the same reasons.”

Watch the video below and visit the Aristocrats’ official website for a list of upcoming tour dates.
